Bids invited for Payra power plant
A Bangladesh-China joint venture has invited bids for building the planned 1,320-megawatt coal-based power plant in Payra, Patuakhali.
The Bangladesh-China Power Company on Friday sought proposals from international bidders for engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of two units of the thermal plant.
The company is a joint venture between state-run North-West Power Generation Company of Bangladesh, and China's National Machinery Import and Export Corporation.
A pre-bid meeting will take place on November 2, and bidders will have until December 20 to procure bid documents, the company said in a notice.
Completed bids must be submitted by December 21, 2015.
The plant is part of the government's efforts to boost electricity production and cut reliance on gas-based power generation, as domestic reserves of the natural resource are dwindling.
Natural gas accounts for about 70 percent of electricity generation in Bangladesh, with about 2 percent power coming from coal.
Bangladesh is currently setting up a coal-fired 1,320MW plant power in Rampal.
On average, Bangladesh now produces 7,500MW of electricity against the country's installed capacity of 11,500MW, according to the Power Division.
Although power generation has doubled in the last six years, some 40 percent of the population remains off the national grid.
The government plans to produce 24,000MW of electricity by 2021 and 39,000MW by 2030.
