2 luxury Mercedes cars seized in Ctg
Customs intelligence officials on Wednesday night seized a car and a jeep of Mercedes brand from the garage of a car service centre in Chittagong city.
To evade taxes, the vehicles were left at a garage in the name of servicing, our Chittagong correspondent reports quoting Tarek Mahmud, assistant director of the directorate.
They are worth around Tk 4.5 crore, the official said.
Being tipped off, a team from Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate, Chittagong office conducted a drive in Muradpur area and found those at the garage of Car Cold and Service Centre in Muradpur area, Tarek Mahmud added.
Two persons named Biswajit and Juboraj separately left the vehicles there more than one month back in the name of servicing, said the official quoting Md Jamshed, owner of the centre.
The vehicles said to have been brought under carnet facility had fake registration number plates.
Primary, findings revealed that two expatriates in London -- Mohammad Monsur Ali and Mohammed Ashraful Islam -- brought the jeep and the car on January, 2011 and December, 2012 respectively through Chittagong Port under carnet facility, the assistant director said.
But those were not taken back from the centre and thus the government revenue was dodged, the official said.
A case will be filed under Customs Act to initiate an investigation, he added.
