1.78 lakh loan defaulters: Muhith
Bangladesh has some 1.78 lakh loan defaulters as of June, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said in parliament yesterday.
Different measures have been taken to retrieve the defaults and dispose of the cases regarding the loan defaults, Muhith said in response to lawmakers' queries, without elaboration.
On the national wage commission, Muhith said it is likely to be placed in the cabinet meeting this month in light of the secretary committee's recommendation.
In reply to another query, Abdul Mannan, state minister for finance and planning, said the country's per capita external debt burden stood at Tk 13,160 as of June.
He disclosed the information on behalf of the finance minister while replying to a question from independent lawmaker Nurjahan Begum.
Mannan said Bangladesh's gross external debt was Tk 207,265 crore on June.
In a scripted reply, Muhith said the foreign exchange reserves were $5.35 billion in 2009, which increased to $26.17 billion on August 24 -- the highest in the country's history.
Muhith said the transaction amount through mobile banking was about Tk 128,771 crore last fiscal year; it was Tk 13,811 crore in July, the first month of the current fiscal year.
