BU organises 4th Quazi Azhar Ali
International Programming Contest
The 4th Quazi Azhar Ali International Programming Contest was held at Bangladesh University on December 27, 2014. The chief guest on the occasion was Md. Mashiur Rahman Ranga, MP, and State Minister, LGRD of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He stressed the competitors to work and develop the nation with information technology and sought cooperation from the young programmers. Renowned urban and environment specialist, architect Iqbal Habib, Member, BOT was present as special guest. Kamrul Hasan, acting Vice Chancellor, presided over the ceremony which was inaugurated by Quazi Jamil Azher, President, BOT. Program director Sadiq Iqbal; Deputy Director (Branding) Quazi Taif Sadat; deans of faculties and heads of departments were present at the ceremony.
Quazi Jamil Azher, President, BOT, advised students of the university to utilise the opportunities and facilities offered to them and hoped that this year, Bangladesh University will be a successful institution based on modern technology. At the closing ceremony, the chief guest, Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, MP distributed the prizes. Forty universities and two groups from Nepal participated in the competition. Professor Dr. Md. Kaikobad of Department of CSE, BUET served as the chief judge. The top three winners were awarded Taka 1 lakh, 50,000 and 25,000 respectively.
Workshop held by BRAC Institute of Languages
As part of a workshop series by BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL), BRAC University, Dr. M. Obaidul Hamid, lecturer, TESOL Education, at the School of Education, University of Queensland, conducted three workshops titled “Steps and Processes of Doing Research”, “Getting Article Published in International Peer-Reviewed Journals”, and “Norms and Variations of English and the Role of Micro-Level Agency” at BRAC University auditorium on December 24 and 27, 2014. The participants of the workshop largely consisted of English language educators from different schools, colleges, public and private universities and students of MA in the TESOL program. Also present at the workshop were Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, Director, BIL and Dr. Sayeedur Rahman, Associate Professor, University of Dhaka. Previously Dr. Obaid had worked as an Assistant Professor at the Department of English, University of Dhaka. He has published over 30 articles and book chapters in local and international peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes including TESOL Quarterly, ELT Journal, Language Learning Journal, Current Issues in Language Planning, World Englishes, Comparative Education and Teacher Development.
DIU introduces Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development program
Daffodil International University is introducing Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development – a four year (Honors) program, the first of its kind in Bangladesh from the Spring 2015 semester. To share the details of the program a 'Meet the Press' event was held on “Introducing Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development program” on January 3, 2015 at the VIP Lounge of National Press Club.
Professor Dr. M. Golam Rahman, Pro-Vice Chancellor (and acting Vice Chancellor), Daffodil International University was present as the chief guest. Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahaboob Ali, faculty member of Business and Economics of Daffodil International University and specialist on entrepreneurial activities, presented the keynote paper at the program. The meet-the-press was also addressed by Professor Rafiqul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics; Syed Mizanur Rahman, Director (Student Affairs); and Masum Iqbal, Head of Department of Business Administration.
Speakers argued that Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development has immense potential, as after the completion of the degree, students can easily be transformed to core human capital.
Bangladesh intends to become a middle income country by 2021. To achieve the target, Bangladesh has to create more employment opportunities. Ensuring employment generation is feasible mainly through the creation of entrepreneurship. To expedite the process, through offering Bachelor of Entrepreneurship Development program under Department of Business Administration, DIU has come forward with a great initiative to support young minds to become entrepreneurs. It is expected that young entrepreneurs who will cater to the need of the society will not depend on others for jobs.
Youth Development and Leadership seminar at BUFT
The Debate Club of BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) arranged a seminar on “Youth Development and Leadership” on December 28, 2014 at the BUFT auditorium. The keynote speaker was Professor Dr. Syed Masud Husain, Vice Chancellor of BUFT. He emphasised on the role of family, society, and educational institutions for leadership development among the young. He also focused on extra-curricular activities and suitable academic curriculum of educational institutions which should encourage young students to be good citizens and leaders. Professor Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan, Pro-VC; Kazi Shamsur Rahman, Chairman of Cultural Club; Faruk Ahmed, Chairman of Debate Club, Atikur Rahman, Dy. Librarian & Moderator of Debate Club; faculty members and officials of BUFT were also present. The master of the ceremony was Md. Ashiqul Islam Choyon, student of AMT department, and the general secretary of Debate Club.
