Build country together leaving behind beliefs
Eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday urged people irrespective of political identities and beliefs to work together to build a prosperous Bangladesh in line with the Liberation War's spirit.
“This is everyone's country. It is not owned by any individual, any party, any family. People are the owners of this country. So, let us come together to build a Sonar (golden) Bangladesh which the martyrs had dreamt of,” he said.
Dr Kamal was addressing a rally, “We demand corruption free and people's welfare-oriented Bangladesh”, organised by Nagorik Oikya before the capital's Jatiya Press Club.
Lakhs of martyrs sacrificed their lives with the dream of establishing a Bangladesh where effective democracy and parliament will prevail and rule of law will be ensured, he said.
"After 43 years of independence, we see that people's lives and properties are insecure, forced disappearances and killings continue, even investigation into these incidents are not carried out properly,” he said.
The country's history proves that whenever people of Bangladesh unite, they definitely overcome all challenges and difficulties regardless of its severity, Dr Kamal added.
Nagorik Oikya adviser and former lawmaker SM Akram said people must come together on a common platform to conduct a movement to bring a qualitative change in politics, the economy and society.
Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna said, “We, taking the common people with us, will build up resistance against the ongoing misrule and corruption in this country.”
He also demanded that Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan be removed from office for his comments following the recent oil tanker capsize in the Sundarbans.
The leaders and activists afterwards brought out a procession ending at the Nightingale intersection.
