BSTI offices in every district soon: Amu
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu has announced that offices of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) will be set up in every district to check substandard products across the country.
The announcement came following the demand of business leaders and entrepreneurs at a discussion organised by BSTI in the capital yesterday marking World Standards Day-2014.
Currently, BSTI has its offices in seven divisional cities including Dhaka. Construction of five district offices is already under process.
The minister said, "It is not possible to stop the nuisance by only enforcing law. Rather creating public awareness is much important."
Besides, the culprits, who make substandard products, should realise that their family members might also fall victims to different diseases due to their offences, Amu added.
He also stressed the need for preventing foreign substandard products from entering Bangladesh. Amu said Bangladesh should not turn into a dumping station for below-standard products.
The government has already taken different steps for modernising BSTI but it should be more modernised and well equipped, Amu said.
In the meeting, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal requested the industries minister for increasing budgetary allocation for enhancing the capacity of BSTI.
Mentioning that the BSTI sometimes faces difficulties while enforcing laws, Industries Secretary Moinuddin Abdullah urged everyone to cooperate with it for ensuring quality products in markets.
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Vice President Monwara Hakim Ali, BSTI Director General Iqramul Haque, and several traders and entrepreneurs spoke at the function.
