Local people, mostly belonging to the Hindu community, formed a human chain in front of Gaibandha Press Club yesterday, demanding exemplary punishment of the culprits who killed college student Ratan Kumar last month.

After the human chain programme, Sudha Rani, mother of the deceased, held a press conference at the same venue. Fellow students, teachers, family members and people of Ratan's village in Sadullapur upazila were present.

Bangladesh Hindu- Buddha-Christian Oikkya Parishad district unit and District Puja Udjapon Parishad jointly organised the programme.

The speakers at the programme urged the authorities to bring all the killers to book and demanded their exemplary punishment under Speedy Trial Act.

Earlier on the night of July 22, a gang of 8 to 10 local drug peddlers allegedly led by Nazrul and Ranju, stabbed Ratan Kumar Sarker, a second-year student of Gaibandha Government College to death and seriously injured his elder brother Bipul Kumar Sarker, a Masters student at their house at Goyeshwer village in Sadullapur upazila.

The gang had been threatening Ratan of dire consequences it he interfered in their anti-social activities in the area several times.

Infuriated by Ratan's defiance, the gang attacked and vandalised their houses in the dead of night and severely stabbed the siblings, leaving Ratan died on the spot.

Critically injured Bipul was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment till now.

Sudha Rani filed a murder case with Sadullapur Police Station on July 23. Police later arrested Nazrul and Ranju, but the other members of the gang are still in large.
