'Bring killers to justice'
Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Pirojpur district unit, yesterday formed a human chain in the town, demanding arrest and punishment of the killers of Makhuli Begum, a widow who died on Sunday allegedly following torture by some neighbours.
Locals said, due to merciless physical torture, the woman died at Khulna Medical College and Hospital (KMCH) on Sunday night.
The deceased, Makhuli Begum, 35, was wife of late Babul Sarder of Khumuria village in Pirojpur municipality.
Police and locals said, on Friday afternoon, Makhuli had an exchange of hot words with her neighbour Faruk Sardar's wife and sister-in-law, when she went there to realise Tk 35,000 borrowed by them.
At one stage, 8-10 relatives of Faruk dragged Makhuli to nearby Baleshwar riverbank and beat up her mercilessly with cricket stamps and sticks, inflicting injury on different parts of the body.
Then they left the scene, leaving her there. Locals took her to Pirojpur Sadar Hospital. As her physical condition deteriorated, she was referred to KMCH where she died on Sunday night.
Sumi Begum, daughter of the deceased, filed a case with Pirojpur PS on Sunday noon, accusing nine identified and some unidentified men and women. Later, police arrested one of an accused, Babul Sheikh.
