Body formed to review vault security
The Banking Division today formed a six-member committee to review security of government bank vaults and formulating measures to stop further heists.
The move follows a heist at a Sonali Bank branch in Bogra from where robbers on Friday took away Tk 30.8 lakh through a 30-feet tunnel from a nearby furniture shop into the vault. In the same fashion, robbers looted Tk 16.4 crore from the bank’s Kishoreganj branch on January 24.
The decision of constituting the committee came from a meeting of the chief executive offices of eight state banks, including Sonali, Janata, Agrani and Rupali with Banking Division Secretary M Aslam Alam in the chair at Bangladesh Secretariat.
The committee will consist of the banking secretary, Banking Division Additional Secretary Amalendu Mukherjee and four deputy managing directors from the government banks, Aslam told reporters after emerging from the meeting.
As part of the security measures, people living in the vicinity of branches of the banks will have to submit their credentials to the nearby police stations, he added.
Within the next three months, incidents of heists at government banks will no longer take place, the banking secretary insisted.
