Boat capsize in Padma: Death toll reaches 8
The death toll from Kushtia river capsize in Padma rose to eight as divers recovered seven more bodies today.
Four children, aged between six and 12, are still remain missing, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
The rescuers located one body in Gorai river, a branch of Padma, yesterday while seven more this morning, Deputy Commissioner of Kushtia Syed Belal Hossain told The Daily Star.
One of the victims was identified as Mala Akter alias Mala, 20, wife of Kajal of Gongarampur in the upazila.
"We are facing difficulties in identifying the victims as the bodies have severely decomposed," the DC said.
A total of 12 passengers went into the water after the boat sank in the mid river in Daulatpur upazila on the Eid Day (Monday) around 3:15pm, said Ashraful Islam Sentu, a boatman of the sunken boat.
Hearing hue and cry, locals rushed to the spot and rescued eight people while the rest remain traceless.
A five-member diving team led by Nadir Hossain started rescue operation around 9:30pm.
Local administration, Fire Service and Civil Defence and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) of Kushtia sectors are giving logistic support to the rescue team.
