BNP man killed in Chapainawabganj bomb blast
A BNP man was killed and three were injured in a crude bomb explosion when they went to place wreaths at a Shaheed Minar in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj in the wee hours of today.
Protesting the death, the BNP-led 19-party alliance called a dawn-to-dusk shutdown (hartal) for Thursday in the district.
The deceased was identified as Asaduzzaman Sujan, 25, son of Shariful Islam of Chaturpur in Shibganj municipal area, reports our Chapainawabganj correspondent quoting Ashiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station.
The OC said people from all walks of life gathered at the shaheed minar on the premises of Shibganj upazila parishad office at 12midnight to pay tribute to the martyrs on the Independence Day.
All on a sudden, two handmade bombs were exploded when the ruling Awami League activists were placing wreaths at the Shaheed Minar and BNP men were waiting behind them to pay homage to the martyrs, the police official said.
One of the bombs was blasted in the middle of the BNP activists while another behind the Shaheed Minar, leaving four people including Sujan injured.
The injured were whisked off to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex from where Sujan was shifted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) in critical condition.
Sujan died at RMCH around 2:00am, the OC said.
The injured BNP activists are Abul Bashar, 36, Nurul Islam, 40, and Toufique, 25.
As the death news spread, BNP men attacked Shibganj upazila unit AL office and vandalised furniture and torched a motorcycle bringing allegation that the ruling party men made the bomb attack.
Contacted, Shahjahan Mia, president of district unit BNP, said AL men are responsible for the death of Sujan.
"19-party alliance has called a daylong hartal for Thursday protesting the killing," the BNP leader told The Daily Star this evening.
Denying the allegation, Shahadat Hossain, AL general secretary of the upazila unit, claimed that BNP men were carrying the bombs that exploded near the shaheed minar.
