‘BNP-Jamaat’ men pound cops’ heads with bricks in Rajshahi
Alleged activists of BNP and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami pounded two policemen with bricks on their heads in Rajshahi city to begin the non-stop countrywide blockade this morning.

Constables Shafiqul Islam and Abdul Kuddus were rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, reports our Rajshahi correspondent quoting police.
“The pro-blockade activists showered the policemen with brick chips. The two policemen sustained wounds and fell down. They pounded their heads brutally with bricks,” Rajshahi city police Additional Commissioner Sardar Tamij Uddin told our correspondent.
A group of BNP-Jamaat activists brought out a procession in the Shalbagan area around 10:30am protesting on the road with burning tyres, the police official said.
A team of the paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said to have come to the rescue, but no one could be detained from the scene, according to the official.
Meanwhile, activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami blasted at least three crude bombs on a police van at Kapasia of Rajshahi city around 12:30pm.
No policeman was hurt in the blasts, said Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station.
Md Yasina, a third year student of Islamic studies in Rajshahi University, and also a Shibir activist received bullet wound as police force to fire, the OC added.
In Narayanganj, violent clashes between police and BNP supporters left at least five people injured, including two bullet-wounded according to locals. 5 were held from the spot.
BNP-men, led by Taimur Alam Khandaker, district unit party president, brought out a procession in Khanpur area of the city around 7:00am today, witnesses and police said.
Police dispersed the procession firing blank shots, said Monjur Kader, officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Model police Station. “Five people were held from the scene.”
Meanwhile, the 20-party alliance was observing the dawn-to-dusk hartals on top of the countrywide blockade in Chittagong, Natore, and Chapainawabganj districts.
The shutdowns were called protesting death of 20-party activists in Natore and Chapainawabganj and arrest of BNP district (north) President Aslam Chowdhury and 300 other supporters in Chittagong.
No major untoward incidents were reported from these three districts until noon. Inter-district bus services were suspended but trains and launches were operating normally.
