BNP demands Rab ADG’s arrest in 7-murder
BNP has demanded arrest of elite force Rab’s Additional Director General Col Ziaul Ahsan for his alleged link with the abduction and killing of seven people including Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam.
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, a joint secretary general of BNP, made the demand today at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office.
He alleged the government is not taking any measures to arrest Col Zia though former Rab officers Maj (retd) Arif Hossain and Lt Commander (retd) MM Rana in a confessional statement before court have named him as a mastermind behind the crime.
Rizvi said the facts behind the killings have been unearthed as the two ex-Rab officers were arrested following a High Court order.
On April 27, Nazrul and his four aides, and lawyer Chandan Sarker and his driver were kidnapped almost at the same time after they had left the court area by two cars.
Six bodies, including those of Nazrul and Chandan, were found floating in the Shitalakkhya on April 30 while the other was found the next day.
On May 3, Nazrul's father-in-law Shahidul Islam alleged that Narayanganj ward-4 Councillor Nur Hossain gave a bribe of Tk 6 crore to Rab men for killing Nazrul.
Three former officers of Rapid Action Battalion – Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Arif and Rana -- were sent on retirement following the allegations.
They were later arrested and placed on remand for several times over their alleged involvement in the abductions and killings.
