Birdem doctors call off strike
The agitating doctors of Birdem General Hospital have called off their strike this afternoon two days into going for the wildcat demonstration following alleged attacks on some of their fellow doctors.
The decision came this afternoon after the doctors had a meeting with health ministry officials and leaders of Bangladesh Medical Association where the authorities assured them of steps against those who were involved in the Sunday evening assault which began after an under-treatment patient died there.
Dr Tanzina Hossain of Endocrinology department at the hospital briefed reporters after the meeting.
Sources at the police headquarters said the authorities have withdrawn ABM Masud Hossain, additional superintendent of police of Dhaka Zone who allegedly instigated the Sunday attack.
The outpatient department of the hospital will be reopened and new patients will be admitted from tomorrow morning, hospital sources said citing decisions taken at this afternoon's meeting.
Sirajul Islam, 57, who had long been suffering from diabetes, died at the hospital at 8:00pm on Sunday. Later, the patient's relatives assaulted and injured Dr Anowar Hossain, Dr Kalyan Devnath and Dr Shamima Akter of Endocrinology department.
The doctors said Masud, who identified himself as a police officer of Dhaka Zone, and another person named Babu assaulted the doctors.
Patient's relatives however denied the allegation of assault.
Healthcare services at hospital came to a stop as due to the indefinite strike by the doctors who demanded security at workplace and punishment to those involved in the attack on the doctors.
Only old and emergency patients are getting treatment at the hospital till today.
On the second day of the strike today, the agitating doctors formed a human chain at Shahbagh intersection for 20 minutes from 12:20pm, creating long tailbacks on all roads around the area.
Prior to forming the human chain, doctors held a press briefing on the hospital premises where the aggrieved doctors said they would continue work abstention until their demand is met.
