With the underground football scene in Dhaka facing slow death and a steady decline in recent times, many would expect basketball to be plunged into the depths even more, considering not many people are as fond of basketball compared to the number of football fans out there in this part of the world.
However, Vertical Horizon is holding the line and organising proper underground basketball tournaments every year, continuing the success with each new tournament being bigger and better than the last.
This year, the tournament kicked off on Friday, 23rd August at Abahani indoor basketball court, with the highlight being a performance by the band Nemesis in front of a lively, expectant crowd. The first match of the tournament was played between the champions from last year (Josephites) and the runner’s up (Vertical Horizon), with Josephites coming out on top with a final scoreline of 72-82.
Held over almost a week, the eventful tournament wrapped up on the 29th of August, the final played between Gulshan Youth Club team and Gregorian Aces — the contenders fending off tough competition throughout to get a well-deserved spot in the final showdown. After a close match which ended with 72-78, Gregorian Aces edged out GYC and took the well-earned title of VH Underground Basketball Champions 2013. Ibrahim Mohammad from Gulshan Youth Club with 131 points and 51 rebounds took away the title of Most Valued Player.
Vertical Horizon is an alternative educational institute aimed at providing a seamless tutoring experience for both private and school students sitting for O and A levels in Dhaka. Started in 2010 by a group of visionary teachers and boasting almost two thousand enrolled students, VH is involved in providing a different spin to education here, and that includes providing scope for sporting activities like football and basketball for the students.
The organisers would like to thank Bangladesh Basketball Federation for helping to make the tournament a reality every year, and hope for their support for the next tournament as well. They would also like to thank Global Education Counselling (GEC) Bangladesh for co-sponsoring the event. GEC is committed to using its expertise to assist students in finding the most appropriate university placement worldwide. GEC works to promote excellence in education and has developed to become one of the most active, innovative and well-respected organisations in the field of university placement.
The organisers would like to give a big shout out to all the sponsors, volunteers and the match officials for making the tournament successful. It wouldn’t be a tournament without an audience, and the organisers would like to thank every single person who turned up to watch the matches.
You’ll see them next year, with a bigger and much improved tournament, powered by Vertical Horizon. Watch this space.
