Five minor girls drowned in Rajshahi, Pabna and Bogra districts on Wednesday and the day before.
Three cousins met their sad end when they went to take a dip in the Padma River in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi Wednesday afternoon, reports our staff correspondent.
They are Tara Molla’s daughter Rani Khatun, 7, his brother Bakkar Mollah’s daughter Sumaiya Khatun, 9, and another brother Lalon Mollah’s daughter Popy Khatun, 10, of Chalkrajapur village.
All of them were students of Chalkrajapur Primary School, said Maksudur Rahman, acting OC of Bagha police station.
Bakkar’s elder daughter Tania Khatun along with the aforesaid three were bathing in the river at around 2pm, said Azizul Biswas, an eye witness to the incident.
As three of them started to drown in the water, Tania shouted for help and tried to save them.
Locals rushed to the scene and rescued Tania who fainted in the water.
She regained her sense after first aid but the three girls, who were rescued one and a half hours later, died at the local health complex at around 5.30pm.
In Pabna, a three-year-old girl drowned in a pond in Atghoria upazila on Wednesday morning.
She was identified as Jembi, daughter of Emdadul Hossain of Bhorotpur village under Chandva union of the upazila, reports our correspondent.
Locals said, Jembi, while walking around her residence, suddenly went near a pond and fell in it. Her family members were not at home at the time of the incident.
In Bogra, a minor girl was drowned at Mothurapur village under Dhunat upazila on Tuesday noon.
The deceased was identified as Sumaiya Khatun, 07, daughter of Faridul Islam and a student of class one at Mushapur Non-government Primary School at the village, reports our correspondent.
Police quoting the family members of Sumaiya said that the girl along with her classmates was taking bath in the water body near their houses.
Sumaiya drowned in the pond as she did not know how to swim.
