Three kids drown

Three kids including two cousins drowned in villages under Daudkandi upazila yesterday. They are Siam Hossain, 5, son of Khalil Ullah and his cousin Aman Ullah, 3, son of Oli Ullah of Tamta village and two and a half year old Arif, son of Abdur Rahim of Maligaon village. Family sources said Siam and Aman drowned while they were playing beside a ditch adjacent to their residence. Meanwhile, family members found Arif’s body floating in a pond near their house around 6:00pm.
New VC at JKKNIU

Prof. Khondakar Ashraf Hossain has joined as the new vice chancellor of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) in Trishal on Monday. He has been appointed as the third VC of the university on a four-year term, university sources said. Earlier, Prof. Dr. Syed Giasuddin Ahmed, the outgoing vice chancellor, completed his term on April 22. Prof. Ashraf served as teacher at English Department of Dhaka University for nearly four decades. During his career, he held many important positions including the posts of head of the English department and hall provost at Dhaka University.
BSF picks up youth

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) kidnapped a Bangladeshi from near Mundumala border in Baliadanga upazila early yesterday. The man was identified as Abul Hasan, 27, son of Shahed Ali of Laxmidangi village of the same upazila. Lt. Col. Abu Bakr Abu, Commanding Officer of BGB 30 Battalion, said BSF members, caught Hasan when he approached the border at about 12:30am. Later, the Indian border guards took him to their camp, said the BGB official.
Precious statue recovered

A precious statue weighing 11.645 kg was recovered at Onahuto Singarpara village under Gunahar union of Dupchachia upazila yesterday morning. Local said when labourers were digging a pond of Abdul Karim, they found the statue worth Tk 10 crore under the soil of the pond at around 8am. Abdul Karim said, after getting the ‘touchstone’, the labourers wanted to take it away. But he informed the UNO who later recovered the statue with the help of law enforcers.
Housewife beaten to death

A housewife was beaten to death allegedly by her husband at Machhuapara village under Pirgachha upazila yesterday noon. The deceased was identified as Khaleda Begum, 29, wife of Naimuddin of the same area and a mother of three children. Police and local sources said, Naimuddin had been reluctant to bear his family expenses for long. The couple locked in quarrels almost every day over the matters. At around 12:00pm yesterday they locked into an altercation and at one stage Naimuddin beat Khaleda up mercilessly, leaving her dead on the spot and fled away from the village.
Seven clinics sealed

A mobile court yesterday sealed seven private clinics in Hariankundu uapzila town. The court also a fine of Tk 35 thousand from the clinic owners when they failed to show necessary papers, physicians and nurses for treatment. The sealed clinics are Shikha Private Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Bhai Bhai Private Hospital, Anwara Clinic, Resido Private Hospital, Janaseba Diagnostic Centre, Arafat Diagnostic Centre and Satabdi Diagnostic Centre. Jhenidah district civil surgeon Dr. Nasrin Sultana said, some local people, after the death of a patient at a clinic in Harinakundu upazila town recently, alleged that all the private clinic in the town run without full-time physician and nurse. She arranged the mobile court which raided the clinics yesterday.
Fake juice factory

Police seized spurious juice and drinks from a fake factory at Alamkathi village in Sadar upazila on Monday evening. They also arrested Salam Mir, 55, owner of the factory and took away the instruments for making juice and drinks.
