International Dance Day was celebrated at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on April 29. The occasion was however toned down due to the Savar tragedy and included an award ceremony and discussion. Eminent dancers assembled at the Academy premises and prayed for the salvation of the deceased. Bangladesh Nritya Shilpi Shangstha (BNSS) together with Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) organised the event. President of BNSS, Minu Haque, and Director General of BSA, Liaquat Ali Lucky, inaugurated the programme. The organisers conferred a lifetime achievement award on noted dance personalities — Zeenat Barkatullah and Syed Abul Kalam — on the occasion. Secretary to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Suraiya Begum, ndc, graced the event as chief guest while Professor Israfil Shaheen of the Department of Theatre of Dhaka University and General Secretary of International Theatre Institute (ITI), Bangladesh, Debprashad Debnath, were present as special guests. Liaquat Ali Lucky presided over the programme. A seminar was also held marking the day where Dr. Nigar Chowdhury presented the keynote paper.
