A Sirajganj court on Wednesday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for killing his wife.
The convict, Abdul Momin, 33, son of late Tamiz Uddin of Mahmudpur village in Kamarkhand upazila, was also fined Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment (RI).
According to the prosecution, a driver by profession, Momin married Swapna, daughter of Saiful Islam of Balukulu village in the same upazila in 2002.
The couple used to quarrel on trifling matters since their marriage.
On 5 September, 2009, Momin beat up and strangled his wife at one stage of altercation in the dead of night.
After the murder, the victim’s father filed a case accusing Momin, his mother and elder brother with Kamarkhand police station.
After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against Momin.
After examining records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Umme Kulsum handed down the verdict.
In Jamalpur, railway police recovered the body of a woman from a water body at village Betmari under Melandah upazila on Tuesday evening, reports our correspondent.
The deceased, about 23 years old, could not be identified, railway police said.
Locals found the body under a railway bridge at around 5.00pm and informed the police.
Melandah police rushed to the spot and asked railway police to recover the body from the spot as it was under the jurisdiction of railway police.
Israil Hossain, officer in-charge (OC) of Jamalpur railway police station said that the woman might have been killed after being hit by a train on Tuesday.
