Bangladeshis often complain that whilst battling the impediments in our daily life, we often forget to take a breather, live a little and forget to cherish and cultivate the talent and creativity that live within ourselves. They often say that the people of Bangladesh have no talent. If truth be told, sometimes, it makes me wonder if this statement is true. But we, here at the Daily Star and Standard Chartered Bank, beg to differ. And that is why, for the last six years we have been jointly organising a competition titled ‘Celebrating Life’ – a contest that welcomes aspiring photographers, lyricists and filmmakers to submit their entries.
So far ‘Celebrating Life’ has discovered many promising young talents. There were contestants who had travelled for miles from the remotest areas of the country just to participate in the event. ‘Celebrating Life’ aims to make room for these young talents to grow and nourish the roots of our arts and culture. Our photographers are now world-renowned; wherever they go, they are cheered on. Critics always belittle the new musicians and songwriters denouncing that they are no match to the melodious tunes that were composed in the good old days. But once, they were given an opportunity to prove their potential, the participants of the lyrics contest of ‘Celebrating Life’ proved the critics wrong. Each year, the participating lyricists have surpassed expectations of our judges to say the least. A large portion of the young generation throughout the country dreams of making it big as a filmmaker but they are unable to fulfill their dreams due to lack of motivation or investment. ‘Celebrating Life’, in an attempt to bring about positive changes gave them their big break. Although in the middle, it was difficult for our insatiable judges who are committed to standards, to choose a deserving filmmaker but this year we are glad we’ve finally found a winner.
Besides the winners and participants of this year’s contest, our Gala Night of ‘Celebrating Life 2013′, held on 4th October also featured mesmerising performances from our very own maestros such as Sheuli Bhattacharjee, Priyanka Gope, Rezwan Ali Lablu, Nishit Dey and Shadhona Dance troupe that blessed our senses.
I realise that winning a competition means a lot and it hurts to lose but it’s important to remember that all contestants have worked really hard and gave their best; whether they took home the awards or not, they’re all still winners. Congratulations to all the winners and the participants of this year’s ‘Celebrating Life’ contest. The theme for our next year’s contest will soon be announced. Hope to see you all very soon.
