Reckless drivers will not have to face charges of intentional killings from now on, the government decided on Wednesday initiating a move to term this kind of deaths as accidental killings.
“Instead of Section 302 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, cases related to deaths in road accidents would now have to be filed under Section 304,” Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir said after a discussion with Bangladesh Truck owners’ Association and Transport Workers’ Association in the capital.
The Section 302 allows bringing the charge of “intentional killing” against a reckless driver for killing anyone on the streets.
Meantime, a driver can be sued under Section 304 only for “accidental killings”.
In the wake of demands from the truck owners and transport workers, the government has also decided in principle to allow trucks to ply the streets of the capital during daytime on Fridays and Saturdays, the minister informed.
Final decision in this regard would be taken after discussion with the traffic police officials, he added.
