Members of the Bangladesh Coastguard detained three robbers along with seven firearms and 107 bullets from Sundarbans west zone in Khulna after a 15-hour gunfight till early Wednesday.
They also rescued two fishermen kidnapped by the bandits for ransom during the drive, reports our Bagerhat correspondent.
The detainees — Amir Ali, 32, Jabbar, 30, and Shahjahan, 26, — are members of a gang locally known as Jahangir Bahini, coastguard members claimed.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of coastguards started the drive in Kateshwar Khal area in Koyra upazila around 2:45pm Tuesday, Lieutenant Commander Muhiuddin Mazumder, staff officer of Mongla west zone, told The Daily Star.
Sensing presence of coastguards, the bandits of ‘Jahangir Bahini’, opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, he said.
At least 32 bullets were exchanged during the gunfight that ended 5:00am Wednesday, the official added.
As the robbers retreated, the coastguard members recovered two shotguns, two light guns (LG) and three single-barrel guns, 107 bullets, several machetes and a fishing trawler, Muhiuddin added.
They also rescued the kidnapped fishermen whose identities could not be known immediately.
