BCL tries to halt higher secondary admission
More than 20 activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League yesterday vandalised the furniture of the Rajshahi Government College auditorium, demanding that the authorities admit some students of their choice to the higher secondary section.
About 20 chairs and a few tables were damaged in the auditorium, where the selected candidates were completing admission formalities.
Witnesses identified the attackers as local and former BCL activists of the college, and said they tried to drive out the admission seekers.
“A group of 'outsiders' tried to stop the admission. We managed to complete the day's admission process successfully, strictly following the merit list,” the college principal, Hobibur Rahman, told The Daily Star.
Eighteen students from science group were enrolled yesterday from the second merit list, while 40 from humanities group and 30 from business group will be admitted today.
Roky Kumar Ghosh, president of the college unit BCL, dismissed the allegations. He called the attackers "outsiders".
Rajshahi Government College, a top institution for higher secondary education in Rajshahi city, will enrol 600 students to the higher secondary section--300 from science group and 150 each from humanities and business studies groups.
The principal filed a general diary with Boalia Police Station in connection with the attack.
