BCL activists assault 2 teachers
Two teachers and four employees of Hajee Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) were injured in an attack allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League men yesterday.
The injured teachers are Prof Md Anis Khan, dean of the agriculture faculty, and Assistant Prof of Agronomy Md Mominul Islam.
The academic activities at the HSTU have been suspended since the BCL unit of the university went on indefinite strike on November 17, demanding withdrawal of expulsion orders against its two leaders.
Around 11:00am yesterday, the HSTU employees and staffs were holding a meeting on the campus to discuss the prevailing situation, witnesses said.
All of a sudden, a group of BCL men led by president Iftekharul Islam Real of the HSTU unit of the BCL, general secretary Arun Kanti Roy and organisational secretary Jahid Hasan swooped on the programme.
Md Ferdous Alam, Jahangir Alam, Ariful Islam and Md Imran Hossain were injured during the incident. Of them, Imran was stabbed, says a press release of the HSTU employees' association.
On information, Prof Anis along with Md Mominul rushed to the spot but they too came under attack.
Imran was undergoing treatment at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital while the others took first aid treatment at the university health centre.
After the alleged attack, the rogue BCL men brought out a procession on the campus and blocked the Dhaka-Dinajpur road for some time.
Ferdous Alam, president of Progressive Officers' Forum of the HSTU, said the three BCL leaders had long been spreading violence on the campus.
On November 4, the university authorities expelled Arun Kanti Roy and Jahid Hasan for helping candidates cheat in the admission test using hi-tech devices.
The BCL men later formed a student movement committee to save their leaders. They coerced many general students into joining the movement, said HSTU sources.
