BCB's match of showing respect
Habibul Bashar 'pulled' himself to a half-century; Naimur Rahman's juicy turners saw the off-spinner scalp three crucial wickets; and Akram Khan got stumped while attempting to smack Naimur out of the park. No, this is not one of those write-ups where we bring you the 'blasts from the past'; neither have we gone for a swirl into the '90s.
These instances in fact took place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday morning. Cricket fans got an opportunity to witness the former stars of Bangladesh's cricket in action in Mirpur yesterday in a friendly T20 game between the ex-cricketers organised by the BCB to honour the country's martyrs on Victory Day. Former middle-order batsman Minhazul Abedin led Shaheed Jewel XI while former national captain Faruque Ahmed led Shaheed Mushtaque XI.
At the end of the day, Bashar, who walked away with the player of the match award, proved to be the fittest of the lot as his 52 off 44 deliveries helped Shaheed Jewel XI win by 49 runs.
"I miss playing the game," a nostalgic Bashar said after the game. "Maybe I should try to play in the Super League round of the Dhaka Premier League," he joked.
Bashar, of course was not the only one who impressed. Naimur Rahman, now a BCB director, still seems to have it in him as he finished with miserly figures of 3 for 17 in three overs.
The match received a special honour with the presence of Shaheed Abdul Halim Chowdhury Jewel's sisters.
