Bangladeshi gets life-term in UAE
A higher court in Dubai yesterday sentenced a Bangladeshi worker to life term imprisonment for allegedly strangling a fellow female worker to death in 2012.
Gulf News, a UAE based English daily, reported that 27-year-old Bangladeshi worker MK (full name could not be known immediately) allegedly killed a fellow national during an altercation over the fee after of having sex with her in 2012.
In November 2012, a Dubai lower court, in absentia, sentenced MK to 15 years in jail. However, he challenged the ruling and requested a retrial.
Yesterday, the Dubai High Court Senior Judge Mohammad Jamal cancelled the 15-year jail term and handed MK a life-term (25 years).
“The accused will be deported to his country following the completion of his punishment,” Gulf News reports quoting the judge.
Chief Prosecutor Khalid Al Zarouni of Bur Dubai Prosecution asked for MK to be given the death sentence.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty. But a UAE police sergeant told the Gulf News that the accused confessed that he knew that the victim was a “prostitute”.
Prosecutors said that the accused had quarreled with the victim over the fee, after engaging in sexual activities in a deserted villa in Mankhoul.
Then, in an act that prosecutors described as “outrageous and devil-driven”, the defendant wrapped the victim’s headscarf around her neck and strangled her.
A Dubai Municipality worker discovered the woman’s decomposed body a few months after her death in a deserted villa marked for demolition.
Bangladesh Consulate Labour Counselor Mizanur Rahman in Dubai yesterday confirmed the matter to The Daily Star over phone.
“We were informed about the matter, but we do not have any details yet. We guess the victim came in the UAE as a domestic maid,” he mentioned.
