Bangladesh re-elected as an ITU executive member
After hours of campaigning in Busan, Bangladesh finally got elected in the ITU Council for the term of 2015-2018. Bangladesh was able to secure 115 votes in the election. Due to the resulting no. of votes, Bangladesh obtained 7th position among the 13 vacant positions. The State Minister for ICT Division of MoPT & ICT Mr. Zunaid Ahmed Palak spearheaded the campaign alongside the team of delegates from Bangladesh. The delegation consisted of BTRC chairman Sunil Kanti Bose, Parliament permanent standing committee members, MoPT & ICT secretary and joint secretary, BTCL chairman, high ups from telcos etc. The voting ended at Bangladesh time 8AM. It must be mentioned that, 193 affiliated countries of the United Nations cast their vote to elect the respective countries to make members of the ITU council for the tenure. The 48 member council is the highest body of the ITU where a total of 13 members will represent the Asia-Pacific region.
"We are very happy to be elected as a executive member state of ITU," Sunil Kinti Bose, chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, told The Daily Star from South Korea this morning over phone.
Bangladesh took part in the last election held in Guadalajara of Mexico in 2010 where 17 countries contested for 13 positions and secured 6th place with 123 votes.
