Teesta issue will be resolved soon
Reiterating Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment over Teesta water- sharing deal with Bangladesh, its Finance Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday said the issue would be resolved very soon.
"The relation between the two countries is very good now. Only the issue of water sharing of Teesta river has remained unsettled. Our prime minister has said it would also be resolved. Now, I am also saying it will be resolved soon," he told his Bangladesh counterpart AMA Muhith.
Muhith quoted Jaitley as saying in a meeting on the sidelines of the spring meetings of the World Bank Group and IMF.
"Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's recent New Delhi visit was a successful and fruitful one except Teesta issue,” Jaitley added, saying that, “All the agreements will be implemented very soon.”
Officials in the Modi government were working closely with West Bengal officials to find common grounds to have Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee agreed to the Teesta deal, he told Muhith.
"Decision will be taken after discussing the issue with the West Bengal government soon," an official, who was present in the meeting, quoted Jaitley as saying.
India pledged $4.5 billion credit in 2017, Muhith said, adding that the total of $7.5 billion Indian credit would play a "major" role in Bangladesh's development.
He also said India's latest credit to Bangladesh was more than that of the ADB.
Muhith said both the countries would work together to implement projects under the Indian Line of Credit, which are being delayed.
He held both the countries responsible for the delay of projects.
