Sundarbans tiger population increasing
When tiger population is going down across the world, Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju has claimed that the number of the animal is increasing in the Sundarbans.
"The country is moving forward under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. We have some tiger conservation programmes of our own. Tigers are very safe in the Sundarbans, where their number is not decreasing; it is increasing," he said yesterday without naming any source of the information.
All studies say the number of tigers in the world's largest mangrove forest is declining. Some say it is decreasing alarmingly.
The minister came up with the remark while addressing a seminar organised to mark the World Tiger Day at the district council auditorium in Bagerhat.
He also said the government is no more dependent on foreigners for the protection of the forest and has taken many programmes on its own in this regard.
Director of Tiger Monitoring Survey and Forest Conservator of Khulna Amir Hossain Chowdhury said camera trapping has completed taking photographs of the Satkhira range of the forest. The snaps are being analysed in lab, he said.
He also said it would take two more years to know the exact number of tigers in the forest.
