Storm kills 11 in 6 dists
At least 11 people were killed and scores injured as a nor'wester swept through several districts, mostly in the northern parts of Bangladesh in the late hours of Tuesday and early yesterday.
The storm also destroyed a large number houses, uprooted trees and damaged crops.
Rail communications between Dhaka and Sylhet were snapped for seven hours till 9:00am yesterday as trees, uprooted by the storm, fell on the tracks at Lawachhara Reserve Forest in Moulvibazar.
Of the deceased, three are from Habiganj, two each from Dinajpur, Bogra and Sherpur and one each from Gaibandha and Jamalpur.
In Habiganj, a woman and her son died when a tree collapsed on their house during the storm at Badauri village in Baniachang upazila. The deceased were identified as Nurjahan Begum, 22, and Rabin Mia, 4.
Ramzan Ali, 40, of the district's Nabiganj upazila was injured when a tree fell on his house. He was rushed to Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead, said Liakat Ali, officer-in-charge of Nabiganj Police Station.
In Dinajpur, a child and a woman were killed and 30 others were injured as a nor'wester lashed the district on Tuesday night.
Al Faidi, 3, died when the walls of a house collapsed in Chirirbandar upazila while Nurjahan Begum, 32, died in Parbatipur municipality, police said.
Officials of Dinajpur Palli Bidyut Samity 1 and 2 said around 100 electric poles were uprooted during the powerful storm that started around 11:30pm on Tuesday, disrupting electricity supply across the district.
In Bogra, Belal Hossain, 65, of Sadar upazila and Kazi Badal, 55, of Sonatola upazila were killed early yesterday in a storm that lasted for only three minutes.
Police said Belal was killed when a wall of his bedroom collapsed on him during the storm while Badal died as a boat he was on capsized in a local water body.
Shafiqur Reza Biswas, deputy commissioner of Bogra, said the district administration had distributed around Tk 24 lakh, 200 bundles of tin and 179 metric tonnes of rice among the victims.
In Sherpur, a child and a man were killed and 10 others were injured as a nor'wester lashed five upazilas of the district early yesterday.
The deceased are Kazli Begum, 7, of Sheribordi upazila and Haidar Ali, 50, of Nalitabari upazila.
In Gaibandha, 45-year-old Nawab Ali of Sadullapur upazila died after a wall of his mud house collapsed on him.
In Jamalpur, 18-year-old Nijhum, daughter of Muksed Ali of Bakshiganj upazila was killed when a tree fell on their house during the storm.
District Relief and Rehabilitation officials said the nor'wester damaged some 600 houses at Dewanganj and Bakshiganj upazilas. Many trees were also uprooted.
