Stalker hacks, beats up 5 of a family
Five members of a family, including a college girl, were injured after they were hacked and beaten up allegedly by the girl's stalker and his associates for protesting stalking in the district's Begumganj upazila yesterday.
The girl, a student of Noakhali Mohila College, her parents and sister were admitted to Noakhali General Hospital. A sister-in-law of the girl received primary treatment at the hospital, said Mahbub Morshed, officer-in-charge of Begumganj Police Station.
Victims said about eight to 10 criminals, led by one Raju, 26, intercepted the college girl near her home in Padmarpul area under Rajganj union when she was returning home.
As the thugs started assaulting the student and tried to harass her, she jumped into a nearby pond and screamed for help.
Hearing her screams, the girl's family members ran in to rescue her. The attackers then swooped on the family members; hacked and beat them up with sharp weapons and sticks.
The family alleged that Raju, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver from Alampur village of the same union, has been stalking the college student for last six months. Introducing himself as an activist of Jubo League, the ruling Awami League's youth front, Raju has been carrying out criminal activities in the area.
However, Rajganj union AL President Tipu Sulatan said Raju was known in the area as a criminal and he had no links with the AL.
Meanwhile, OC Mahbub visited the victims at the hospital yesterday and told journalists that they were investigating the incident.
