SP Babul breaks silence
Over two months after his wife had been brutally murdered in broad daylight, Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter broke his silence and made a post on Facebook yesterday.
“When I was the only one listening to the crying of my motherless daughter, people were busy cooking up stories,” he wrote describing the days after his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was stabbed and shot dead in Chittagong on June 5.
SP Babul Akter began by the post describing the early days of his marriage with Mitu and ended with the experience of living with his two minor children who have no mother.
He talked about Mitu's life as a young woman and her transformation to a woman who took care of him and his children. In an emotional way, he said the teenager he married gradually changed his life as she grew older.
“The two children and I did not sleep under her caring shade [since the murder of Mitu].”
Babul said his son was not of the age to understand the complexities of life but he had to witness the death of his mother.
“His questions are simple but words to answer them are hard to find.”
“I am not wearing any armour but I am holding in my arms two children who have lost their mother. I am not able to prevent or bear any attack,” Babul continued.
A high police official said the resignation letter of SP Babul Akter was with the home ministry. As far as the official was concerned, the letter has not yet been accepted.
Preferring not to be named, the police officer said until his resignation was accepted, he was still in service.
SP Babul's father-in-law Mosharraf Hossain told The Daily Star Babul goes to police headquarters every day.
Following the murder of Mitu, government high ups and police officials told the media that they suspect militants were involved in the killing.
However, following the apprehension of a number of suspects, the police called in Babul and interrogated him for 15 hours.
Police reportedly offered Babul a deal; resigning or face trial.
