Seven-day remand sought for Rony
Detectives yesterday sought a seven-day fresh remand to interrogate Bakhtiar Alam Rony to gather more information about the shooting and killing of two people in the city's New Eskaton area on April 14.
Bakhtiar is the son of Pinu Khan, a lawmaker of the ruling Awami League.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Aminul Haque fixed June 24 for hearing on the prayer and asked the jail authorities to produce Rony before it on that date.
In the remand prayer, Dipak Kumar Das, a sub-inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of police and also the investigation officer of the case, said he had earlier quizzed Rony intensively for four days and got vital clues about the killings.
On June 13, Rony was sent to jail on completion of his remand.
But cunning Rony, the prime accused in the double murder, was trying to conceal a lot of information vital to the investigation, Dipak said.
Earlier his driver and three of his friends had given statements before magistrates where they said Rony had killed the two people with his licensed pistol. So, he needed to be remanded to find out more information about the killings, the DB official added.
Meantime, ballistic tests confirmed that a bullet found inside the body of one of the two persons killed in a shooting in the capital was from the pistol of Rony, police said on Friday.
The other accused, Imran Fakir, was the driver of the sports utility vehicle (SUV) in which Bakhtiar along with his two friends -- Kamal Alias Tiger Kamal and Kamal Mahmood -- was travelling on.
Court sources said the three in their statements before metropolitan magistrates said that Bakhtiar lowered the window of the SUV after it got stuck in a traffic jam in New Eskaton and fired four to five times around 1:30am, hitting Abdul Hakim, rickshaw-puller, and Yakub Ali, CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver. They died in hospital later.
Bakhtiar was drunk and feeling “suffocated inside the vehicle”, sources said.
