RU student leader held for FB posts
Police yesterday arrested Rajshahi University unit Biplobi Chhatra Moitri leader Dileep Roy on the allegation of making derogatory comments about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in his Facebook status updates.
In one of his two Facebook status updates between 9:00am and 10:00am yesterday, he made derogatory comments on Bangabandhu and Hasina.
In the other one, he made an oblique reference to Rampal power project and the Phulbaria coalmine protest 10 years ago.
Motihar police arrested Dileep, general secretary of RU Biplobi Chhatra Moitri and a student of economics, around noon at Paribahan Market on campus.
RU Chhatra League President Rashedul Islam Ranju also filed a case against Dileep under the ICT Act with Motihar Police Station.
Demanding Dileep's immediate release, RU Chhatra Moitri President Pradip Mardi said a man cannot be arrested for a Facebook status.
Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir of Motihar Police Station said, “We held Dileep as he posted derogatory comments on Facebook. Later, Rajshahi University Chhatra League filed a case against him and now we are showing him arrested in the case filed under information and communication technology act.
