Policy to protect domestic workers
The Domestic Workers Protection and Welfare Policy, 2015 is expected to get cabinet nod by mid-November.
"The policy is expected to be placed for the cabinet approval by November 15," labour and employment secretary Mikail Shipar told BSS.
Once the policy is approved, around 2 million domestic workers will get all facilities under the Labour Law, 2006.
Shipar said the draft policy has been finalised in consultation with all concerned, including the Domestic Workers' Rights Network.
Under this policy, information about domestic workers in city corporations, districts, upazilas and unions will be collected, he said, adding the domestic workers will get financial assistance from the government's labour welfare foundation.
Besides, they will come under the coverage of different social security supports, including insurance.
Shipar said the government has decided to construct two 200-bed hospitals in Narayanganj and Tongi at a cost of Taka 100 crore for providing treatment facilities to workers.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already given the labour and employment ministry necessary directives in this regard.
