Nine 'JMB men' held in 3 dists
Police arrested nine suspected members of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh in special anti-militancy drives in Natore, Naogaon and Rajshahi early yesterday.
Meanwhile, Chittagong police arrested 133 people, who are accused in regular cases, across the district on the second day of the drives to crack down on militancy.
Rajshahi police arrested five militants named Abdus Sattar, 33, Abdul Mannan, 35, Abul Hossain, 55, Lutfar Rahman, 38, and Rohidul Islam, 43, said Sumit Chowdhury, additional superintendent of police.
Acting on a tip-off, police made the arrests around 2:00am at Goalkandi union. The arrestees are accused in several militancy-related cases filed in the upazila, Sumit told The Daily Star.
Natore police arrested Shahab Uddin, 45, and Rahedul Islam, 46, at Merigasa of Baraigram upazila. Both of them are accused in a militant case filed with Boyalia police station, said Shafiqul Islam, assistant superintendent of police.
In another drive, Naogaon police arrested two -- identified as Khairul Islam, 25, and Abdul Mannan, 45, -- at Manda and Atrai upazilas of the district.
According to police, Khairul is an active member of JMB and an associate of Bangla Bhai who was second-in-command of JMB and was executed in 2007.
The other arrestee, Mannan is facing several charges including extortion, police said.
Anti-militancy drives began on Friday and will continue till March 18 to track down militants and their hideouts, said Limon Roy, additional SP of the district.
Regarding the arrestees in Chittagong, Additional Superintendent of Police Rezaul Masud said no one of them is a militant.
Law enforcers there are yet to trace any hideout of militants, he added.
Sitakunda circle senior assistant superintendent of police said police were investigating some information provided by Redwanul Huq, owner of Redwan Manzil where a hideout of Neo-JMB militants had been found.
“We are checking his mobile call list and other relevant issues. With the evidence we have at present, we cannot confirm that he is directly linked with the group. However, he assisted the group.”
