Trucker beaten to death after running over 2 goats

A truck driver was beaten dead by a mob at Rajshahi's Puthia upazila after his vehicle ran over and killed two goats.

The victim, Abu Taleb, 33, of Jhalmalia area of the upazila, died of his injuries at Puthia Health Complex around 3:30am yesterday, said Rejaul Islam, officer-in-charge of Puthia Police Station.

Around 7:30pm on Friday, while driving on Bhabaniganj-Puthia Road, the truck ran over the two goats in Shibjait area of Bagmara upazila, the OC said quoting witnesses and after conducting primary investigation.

The driver, along with his truck, had tried to flee the scene after the incident, the OC claimed.

Some locals in 10-12 motorcycles, however, chased the truck and caught it in Basupara area of Puthia around 8:30pm, said the OC.

The driver was beaten with sticks there in the presence of other locals. After he fainted, he was taken to Puthia Health Complex, where he died early yesterday, he said.

The helper of the truck's driver managed to flee.

The body was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for autopsy, said the OC.

He also said the police arrested five suspects and the victim's wife was taking preparations for filing a case.
