MP still on the run
Police have yet to arrest Gaibandha-1 lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton though an attempt-to-murder case has been filed against him for shooting 10-year-old Saurav.
The district administration, however, has cancelled the licences of Liton's two firearms surrendered through his brother-in-law on Saturday, said Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner Abdus Samad.
Since the shooting of the boy on Friday, Liton and his family members have been out of their house.
His house was found locked and his car also was seen abandoned near the house. The cell phones of the lawmaker and his wife Khurshid Jahan Smriti were switched off.
"As he [Liton] is a lawmaker, there are some specific rules to be followed to arrest him," said Ashraful Islam, police superintendent of Gaibandha.
Meanwhile, a section of local Awami League leaders and activists in the district's Sundarganj upazila issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the authorities to arrest the lawmaker.
From a human chain on Sundarganj Upazila Complex premises around 11:00am yesterday, they also demanded the immediate termination of Liton's parliament membership.
Sajedul Islam, organising secretary of Sundarganj AL, said Liton tarnished the image of the party; he has no right to remain a lawmaker.
After being elected lawmaker, he indulged in numerous “scandalous acts”, he alleged.
According to locals, Liton, also president of Sundarganj AL, is a drug addict. He often threatened his rivals brandishing guns and fired shots into the air, creating panic among people.
He even beat up a magistrate last year, they said.
Abdullah-Al-Mamun, an AL leader and Sundarganj municipality mayor, said though Liton had surrendered his pistol and shotgun, more forearms were still in the possession of his close aides.
Saurav's father Saju Mia, who filed the case on Saturday night, sought justice for the shooting of his innocent child.
“My son could have been killed," he said from the human chain, organised under the banner of Upazila Nagorik Sangram Parishad. He also demanded security for his family members.
According to the family, Sourav went for a morning walk with his uncle Shahjahan Ali on Friday. Liton, who was then returning to his home by his car, called them in a hand gesture.
Scared, Shahjahan started running away. Liton got angry at this and opened fire from his personal gun. Two bullets tore through Sourav's right leg and one through the left.
A class-IV student of Gopalcharan Govt Primary School, Sourav is undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
