MP Liton Murder: Police arrest 6 suspects
Police yesterday arrested six people in Sunderganj upazila of Gaibandha for their alleged involvement in the killing of Awami League lawmaker Manzarul Islam Liton.
All the arrestees -- Farid Mia, Hazarat Ali, Nabinur, Shamiul Islam, Hadisur Rahman, and Ziaur Rahman -- are affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami, police said.
They were produced before a court which sent them to jail.
Police made the arrests at various places in Sunderganj in the wee hours of yesterday.
Ashrafuzzaman, investigation officer of the murder case, said police yesterday sought seven-day remand for each of the arrestees and that the hearing on their remand prayers could be held today.
He said more suspects would be arrested soon.
The IO said police had sent to Dhaka four bullet shells and two projectiles recovered from the guest room of the lawmaker for tests.
Earlier, police had picked up 27 people after the gruesome murder and of them 21 were shown arrested in the case.
Union units of AL and its front organisations continued their agitations at different places in the district, demanding arrest of the killers.
Liton was shot inside his Masterpara home by armed assailants on December 31. He died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital that evening.
