Mobin out on bail
BNP Vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury was released from jail yesterday, three days after the apex court upheld his High Court's bail order in two criminal cases.
Kashimpur prison Jailer Nasir Ahmed told The Daily Star that Shamsher's bail papers reached the jail on Thursday night. "After scrutinising the papers, he was freed around 1:30pm today [yesterday]."
The BNP leader was kept at Gazipur's Kashimpur Jail-2. Only family members were present at the jail gate to receive him, said sources at the jail.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court passed "no order" on two appeals moved by the prosecution challenging the bail given to Shamsher by the High Court.
The BNP leader was implicated in two cases filed over attacking ruling Awami League Netrakona-1 lawmaker Chhabi Biswas and violence near Dhaka Medical College Hospital -- both on December 24 last year.
Detectives picked him up from his Banani Old DOHS residence on January 8 this year in a case filed with Shahbagh police for attacking Biswas.
On May 6, the HC granted the BNP leader bail in the two cases and sought an explanation from the government as to why he should not be given regular bail.
