Man shot dead in Cox's Bazar
A man was killed and 10 others, including a local Awami League leader and a schoolgirl, were injured as a criminal gang opened fire on them in Pekua upazila's Chhiradia village yesterday.
Locals said the attackers, led by one Kaisar of the village, swooped on a pond of his co-villager Jasim Uddin to loot fish around 8:00am.
As Jasim tried to resist them, both the groups were locked in an altercation. At one stage, the gang fired bullets, killing a man on the spot and injuring 10 others.
The dead is Kafil Uddin, 32, son of Jasim Uddin.
Shahidul Islam, chairman of Ujantia Union Parishad, said when the attackers were fleeing the spot, locals, led by him, chased the gang. Later, the criminals jumped into the Matamuhuri river to escape. Hundreds of locals surrounded them from both banks of the river.
On information, police detained eight of the attackers with the help of villagers. Four sharp weapons were also seized from their possession.
Police recovered the body of Kafil and sent it to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The injured, including Azam Khan, president of Pekua Sadar union unit AL, and Jaynab Begum, 13, a class VI student, were rushed to Pekua Upazila Health Complex. Azam Khan is an uncle of Jasim Uddin.
Three of the wounded were later shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
