Family stabs 3 to snatch arrestee from police
Two policemen, including a sub-inspector, and their informant were stabbed allegedly by family members of an accused yesterday afternoon in Savar on the outskirts of the capital. The attackers were "trying to snatch away an arrestee" from the law enforcers' custody.
The injured -- SI Mehedi Hasan, 27, of Savar Model Police Station, constable Sumon Mia, 25, and their informant Aminul Islam, 26 -- were undergoing treatment at Savar Enam Medical College Hospital.
Of them, Sumon's condition was critical, said Nasir Uddin, in-charge of the hospital's operating theatre. There were stab marks on different parts of their bodies, he said.
Contacted, doctor Mamun, registrar of neurosurgery department of Enam Medical College Hospital, said two were out of danger, but Sumon's condition was critical.
Police picked up four to five people for their alleged involvement in the attack, said Nazmul Hasan Firoz, senior assistant superintendent of Savar police.
A number of policemen of Savar Model Police Station, led by SI Mehedi, went to Mozidpur to arrest one Khaza, against whom there was an outstanding arrest warrant in a drug case, he added.
Police arrested Khaza, but his family members attacked police and their informer with sharp weapons and tried to snatch the accused away, the police official claimed.
On information, additional police were sent to the spot and they took the injured to the hospital, he said.
Contacted, Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman, superintendent of Dhaka district police, said he heard about the incident.
