False alarm panics people on board Biman flight
An alert regarding extremist threat and explosives in a Biman flight from London sparked panic at Sylhet Osmani International Airport yesterday morning.
Passengers waited more than three hours as security officials thoroughly searched the aircraft, went through passengers' details and the cargo before ruling out any security threat.
The flight of Bangladesh Biman Airlines, BG202, a Boeing 777, took off from Heathrow Airport at 6:56pm on Wednesday.
Around an hour later, London air traffic control informed the pilot that there might be a security threat, regarding extremists or bombs, said Shakil Miraz, general manager of Biman.
The authorities of Sylhet Osmani International Airport along with police and Rapid Action Battalion took all necessary measures at the airport in Bangladesh.
The plane landed at 10:15am yesterday, he said.
A top security official at the airport told The Daily Star that they had clear intelligence information about the suspected threat and that they thoroughly checked all passengers and the cargo but found nothing.
The dog and bomb squad of Rab and fire fighters also took part in the screening of the aircraft. The flight took off from the airport at 1:50pm and reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 2:05pm.
