DNCC plans to build 22 loops to ease traffic jam
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has moved to build 22 U-shaped loops along a 36-kilometre stretch of Dhaka-Gazipur road to ease traffic.
There will be no right-turn on the road stretching from Masterbari of Gazipur to Satrasta in the capital's Tejgaon. Vehicles will have to use the loops to turn right, a DNCC official told The Daily Star.
A feasibility study on this project is being prepared by architect Tanvir Newaz and SM Salehuddin, chief adviser of M/S Humayara Enterprise, he mentioned, adding that the firm will present the report to the DNCC on November 26.
Speaking at a discussion in the city's Mohammadpur last month, DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq said the corporation embarked on an initiative to build U-shaped loops in the capital to reduce traffic congestion.
The DNCC official said arranging land for the loops would be the main challenge for the corporation as most of the land along the road is owned by different government authorities.
Light vehicles like cars and microbuses will use 12 loops to be built near Kohinur chemical, under the Mohakhali flyover, Chairman Bari, Banani graveyard, Rajlaxmi Complex in Uttara, House Building, Tongi College Gate, Abdullahpur bus stop, Board Bazar, Open University, Gazipur and Matshya Khamar (Gacha road).
For large vehicles like buses and trucks, there will be 10 loops near Satrasta intersection, Mohakhali Bus Terminal, Banani, Kawla of Khilkhet, Jasim Uddin Road, Tongi Railway Station, Mill Gate in Tongi, Bhogra Bypass, Borsha Cinema (before Joydebpur crossing) and Shalna.
Talking to this correspondent, SM Salehuddin said vehicles make right-turns at around 32 points of the road, causing traffic jams.
He claimed the proposed loops would reduce 30-40 percent traffic hold-ups.
People cross the road at about 50 points on the stretch of the road between Tongi Bridge and Gazipur crossing. The situation is even worse on the stretch between Gazipur crossing and Satrasta in Tejgaon, he added.
“Considering the present traffic situation, we are trying to ease it on a short time basis at a minimum cost,” said Salehuddin.
Under the project, all the pedestrian crossing points on the road will be blocked. They will have to use footbridges to cross to the road.
He said the proposed project will not clash with other ones as the loops would be built at the ground level.
