City hospital replaces baby boy with dead infant
A private hospital in the capital has allegedly replaced a baby boy of one couple with the dead infant of another.
Relatives of the couple from Brahmanbaria filed a complaint with Mohammadpur Police Station in this regard.
In the complaint, Md Ashraful, the baby's uncle, said his nephew was born at their home on September 23.
The baby was then brought to Dhaka and admitted to Baby Care and General Hospital in Shyamoli on September 25 as he was having breathing problems.
"We admitted him to the hospital on Monday at 6:00am for only a few hours as we were waiting for a bed to be free at Dhaka Shishu Hospital. They told us the baby was doing fine till 10:00am. Later, at 11:00am, they handed over a dead child to us," said Ashraful Alam.
He added that the hospital first realised a bill of Tk 11,000 before handing over the body.
"But the dead baby they gave us was not my nephew. We had taken his photo after birth and it does not match. So we protested," said Ashraful.
“Later, we checked the register of the hospital and found a family from Tangail who had admitted their baby boy in the hospital before. The baby was released from the hospital after our nephew was admitted,” Ashraful said.
"We collected their number from the register and called them. After checking, we saw my nephew was with that family from Tangail. They had gone to another hospital in Dhanmondi," he said.
Asked, officer-in-charge (investigation), Hafizur Rahman of Mohammadpur, said last night they received an allegation.
"We are investigating the matter. We will apply to the court for a DNA test," said an official from Mohammadpur Police Station.
Police also quizzed Rafiqul Islam, the chairman of the hospital.
When called on his cell phone, Rabiul Islam, Rafiqul's brother, said the police were interrogating his brother.
"The hospital management did not change the baby. The parents became emotional following the death of their child and made this allegation," he claimed.
