'Bribery': Court accepts charges against Shyamal Kanti
A Narayanganj court yesterday accepted bribery charges against Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, the former headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Narayanganj.
His lawyer Shakhawat Hossain's petition for withdrawing Shyamal's name from the case was rejected by the court of senior judicial magistrate Akhtaruzzaman earlier.
The charge sheet was submitted on April 17.
"We filed a petition to the court to withdraw his name from the case. But the court rejected the plea. Shyamal Kanti is an innocent teacher. This false case was filed to drive him away from his job," Shakhawat said.
The same court granted permanent bail to Shyamal last month.
The case was filed by Morsheda Begum, a teacher of the same school, on July 14 last year.
Shyamal was physically assaulted by a mob on May 13, 2016 over allegations that he had made derogatory comments about religion while meting out corporal punishment to a student.
Salim Osman, Jatiya Party lawmaker from Narayanganj-5, was then seen making Shyamal hold his ears and do squats in public, sparking outrage across the country.
A few days after he was humiliated last year, the school's management forced him to resign alleging that he had made derogatory comments about religion.
An education ministry probe later found the allegation to be baseless and Shyamal was reinstated as the headmaster.
