BNP had no link to Aug 21 attack
Terming the August 21 grenade attack on an Awami League rally “a heinous act”, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan yesterday claimed that his party had no involvement in the incident.
According to him, the government was trying to establish BNP's links with the attack only to fulfil its political purpose. He also demanded a “fair and neutral investigation” into the incident in 2004.
“The August 21 grenade attack was a horrible and terror act. We [BNP] want to clearly state that the real offenders, no matter who they are, should be tried following a fair and neutral probe,” Nazrul said.
The BNP leader was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman in the capital along with his party leaders and activists.
They went there following the release of Shamsuzzaman Dudu, an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, from jail.
The ruling Awami League blames the high-ups of BNP, which was in power in 2004, for the attack which the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina escaped narrowly.
On the allegation, Nazrul said, "We have repeatedly cleared our party position on this matter. We had no involvement in the attack.”
”The BNP doesn't believe in the politics of vengeance,” he claimed.
Asked about the recent arrests of three pro-BNP lawyers for allegedly financing militants, the senior party leader said he had no idea about it.
However, Nazrul claimed that the government was trying to carry out propaganda against his party so that it seemed BNP was in favour of militancy and terrorism. “But, the people of the country know the truth,” he said.
