ASI arrested over mugging in capital
An assistant sub-inspector of police and one of his accomplices were arrested while allegedly trying to mug a trader in the capital's Khamarbari on Tuesday night.
The arrestees, Jasim Uddin, 30, an ASI of Khulna range police, and Mithu, 35, whose occupation remains unknown, were caught and handed over to police by people present at the scene. Two others managed to flee.
The trader, Himel Khan, filed a case accusing four, said GG Biswash, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Himel said he and his cousin Shafiq Khan were going to the airport in Dhaka around 11:00pm on Tuesday when the arrestees and two others, riding bikes, stopped their rented car.
The bikers, claiming to be policemen, snatched away the car key and mobile phones of Himel and Shafiq, who was supposed to fly to Malaysia later that night.
Himel and Shafiq became suspicious and started crying for help.
Bystanders came forward and held Jasim and Mithu, but two others sped away from the scene on a motorcycle, Himel said.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police later arrested the two and seized an unregistered motorcycle.
Police sources and witnesses said police first tried to cover up the incident through negotiations and didn't record the case, an allegation denied by the officers concerned.
“It took some time to record a case as we were trying to arrest the two who fled and verify the allegations,” GG Biswash said, when asked about the allegation.
