Admission worry for jubilant students
An admission worry threatens to take over thousands of students, who are still exulting in the results of their SSC exams, as they are now about to face a tough competition to get into reputed colleges.
This was mainly because spots at reputed colleges were small in number, compared to the number of students who got GPA-5.
Parents say the number of GPA-5 scorers in the Secondary School Certificate examination was high and the number of quality colleges was not increasing, making it difficult for the students to get into those.
Education ministry officials asserted that there would be no seat crisis in colleges across the country, but they admitted that there would be an intense pressure on some colleges in the capital as most students wish to get into those.
A total of 1,11,901 students under 10 boards secured GPA-5 and 4.80 lakh students obtained between GPA-5 and GPA-4 in this year's SSC exams.
In Dhaka Board alone, 36,801 students obtained GPA-5 while a handful of 20 reputed colleges in the capital could accommodate between 18,000 to 20,000 students, sources in the education ministry said.
The number of colleges in Dhaka is about 145 with around 43,000 seats, they said.
"This shows a hard competition is looming," a high official of the ministry said, wishing to remain anonymous.
"This situation arises every year after the SSC exam results. Good students try to get into these 15-20 renowned colleges in the capital, creating a pressure on themselves," he said.
Shamsul Haque Khan School and College which topped the list of 20 best institutions under Dhaka Board could accommodate around 600 students including those from its school section.
Similarly, Rajuk Uttara Model College, second on this list, could accommodate around 1,365 students, including its school students.
Ideal School and College, Motijheel, third on this list, has 1,200 spots, out of which 500 is reserved for its own students.
The admission process for class XI in colleges across the country begins June 6 with the distribution of admission forms, which would continue until June 18.
Students would have to apply online at www.xiclassadmission.gov.bd.
This year's admission fee has been fixed at Tk 120, including the cost of the admission form and administrative charges.
Like in previous years, no admission test would be held.
Student could name five colleges as their choice and the education board would decide which of the colleges they would get into on the basis of their SSC results.
