80-year-old beaten up for 'theft'
An elderly female beggar has been beaten up twice on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone in Garobazar of Tangail's Madhupur.
Eighty-year-old Achhiron Nessa, of Hatilate Dighalchala in Mymensingh's Phulbaria upazila, is now undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex.
Achhiron, a mother of two, went to Garobazar in Madhupur on Sunday. She asked for food at the house of Harun-or-Rashid, a fertiliser and pesticides dealer. She left the house after having lunch.
Talking to The Daily Star yesterday, Achhiron said, “After my departure, people of the house alleged that a mobile phone was stolen from their house. On suspicion, Harun and his relatives stopped me and took me to their house from the bazaar and beat me up mercilessly."
As they did not find any mobile phone with her, she was freed. They took the rice she had been given by people and threw it at her, Achhiron said.
She returned home in the evening.
Later, four Garobazar night guards went to her house on a rickshaw-van and took her to the market. She was beaten up again, alleged the victim's daughter Ramichha Khatun, a day labourer.
The night guards also confined her mother to the market committee's office. When she went there to take her mother home, the attackers pushed her and she fell to the ground, Ramichha said.
Around 9:00pm on Sunday, they freed them after taking their signatures on a blank paper, claimed Ramichha.
“I demand punishment of the attackers," said Achhiron.
Nazrul Islam, resident medical officer of Phulbaria Upazila Health Complex, said Achhiron was admitted to the hospital with bruises on different parts of her body.
Her condition was improving, but she would need at least a week before she could leave the hospital, said the physician.
Contacted, Harun refuted the allegation of beating up Achhiron and said he did not know who assaulted the woman.
Rifat Khan Rajib, officer-in-charge of Phulbaria Police Station, said the victim went to the police station on Monday afternoon, but they did not record her complaint as the spot is in Madhupur upazila of Tangail.
They told her to go to Madhupur Police Station to lodge a complaint against the attackers.
The OC also said Harun filed a complaint with the police station against Achhiron for her alleged involvement in the mobile phone theft on Monday.
